Our Sustainability Commitment

We are devoted to making water activities accessible to everyone, designing bespoke swimming aids tailored to individual needs. Our ongoing innovation includes developing plastic-free binders, ensuring our products are entirely derived from natural materials. Every aspect of our production aligns with our lifecycle philosophy, minimizing negative impacts on both the planet and its people, while striving for a net-positive outcome.

Sustainability and Plastic Reduction

At the core of our values lies an unwavering commitment to reducing plastic usage. With an estimated 5.25 trillion pieces of plastic polluting the world's oceans and predictions suggesting more plastic than fish by 2050, we are driven to create meaningful change.

Supporting Ocean Conservation

Through the 1% for the Planet initiative, we proudly support organizations like The Wave Project and Surfers Against Sewage (SAS). We believe the ocean should remain a clean and shared space for all to enjoy and benefit from.

Product Lifecycle

1. Material Sourcing

Cork Harvesting: Cork is sustainably harvested from cork oak trees every 12 years without harming the trees.Local Sourcing: Cork is obtained from regional suppliers, supporting local economies and reducing transportation emissions.

Environmental Benefits: The cork oak trees absorb substantial CO2, making the material carbon-neutral or better.

2. Production

Minimal Processing: Cork is processed with minimal energy input, preserving its natural qualities.Plastic-Free Design: Innovative techniques are employed to avoid synthetic binders, ensuring the product remains 100% natural.Eco-Friendly Practices: Production processes align with a cradle-to-grave philosophy, aiming for net-positive environmental outcomes.

3. Packaging

Minimal Packaging: Products are shipped with little or no packaging, using biodegradable or recyclable materials if necessary.

Low Waste: Reducing packaging waste helps minimize environmental impact during this stage.

4. Distribution

Local and Regional Focus: Prioritizing local markets to reduce carbon emissions from transportation.Eco-Friendly Logistics: Partnering with environmentally conscious shipping companies where possible.

5. Usage

Durable and Long-Lasting: Cork’s natural resilience ensures that floats can endure frequent use in both leisure and high-intensity water activities.

Low Maintenance: Occasional application of natural wax (e.g., beeswax) maintains buoyancy and appearance.

6. End-of-Life Management

Recycling Program: Customers are encouraged to return used floats for recycling and repurposing into new cork products.

Compostability: If not returned, cork can biodegrade naturally without harming the environment.Circular Economy: Recycled cork is used to create new floats or other sustainable products, closing the lifecycle loop.

7. Community Impact

Ocean  Conservation: A portion of proceeds supports ocean conservation efforts through the 1% for the Planet initiative.

Consumer Education: Promotes awareness about sustainable practices and the environmental benefits of cork. This lifecycle reflects the brand’s dedication to sustainability, from sourcing to end-of-life, ensuring minimal environmental impact and maximum value for customers and the planet.

The 2030 Sustainable Development Goals

Corcamar & The United Nations 2030 Sustainability Goals At Corcamar

we’re inspired by the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and strive to align our efforts with its vision. While there’s always room to grow, we feel particularly connected to Goals 12, 13, 14, and 15, and we’re taking steps we believe contribute to a more sustainable future.

Goal 12: Responsible Consumption and Production

We aim to prioritize responsible production by using cork sourced from carefully managed cork oak forests. What we love about cork is that it’s harvested by hand without harming the trees, supporting regeneration and long-term sustainability. Our goal is to create products that are as environmentally friendly as possible, from the cork itself to the minimal, recycled packaging we use. We hope to contribute to a world where sustainable consumption becomes second nature.

Goal 13: Climate Action

Cork trees are fascinating for their ability to absorb carbon dioxide, and by using cork, we feel we’re supporting a material that helps in the fight against climate change. We’re always looking at how to lower the energy and emissions involved in our processes, even as we continue to learn and improve. We also see our products as a way to encourage others to make climate-conscious choices, offering natural alternatives to synthetic swim products.

Goal 14: Life Below Water

The impact of plastic pollution on our oceans is something we think about often. By creating biodegradable swim floats made from cork, we hope to offer a small but meaningful way to reduce plastic waste. We’re not just focused on the product itself but also on supporting wider efforts to protect marine ecosystems and reduce the environmental burden on our oceans.Goal 15: Life on LandCork oak forests are such incredible ecosystems, hosting diverse wildlife and plant species. By using cork and supporting sustainable harvesting practices, we feel we’re playing a small role in helping preserve these unique habitats. We’re also excited by the potential of reforestation and conservation initiatives and hope to explore ways we can contribute further to protecting life on land.

Goal 15: Life on Land

Cork oak forests are such incredible ecosystems, hosting diverse wildlife and plant species. By using cork and supporting sustainable harvesting practices, we feel we’re playing a small role in helping preserve these unique habitats.

A shared vision for a sustainable future

While we’re proud of the steps we’re taking, we know sustainability is a journey rather than a destination. Our goal is to keep improving and to do what we can to support a healthier planet. We’re inspired by those who share this vision and are grateful for the opportunity to create products that align with these values.Thank you for supporting Corcamar as we work together toward a more sustainable future.

FAQs

Are cork swim floats eco-friendly?

Yes. Cork is one of the most sustainable materials in the world. It’s harvested from cork oak trees without harming them, allowing the bark to regrow. Each harvest helps the tree absorb even more carbon dioxide, which means every Corcamar float has a positive impact on the planet.

Why is cork better than plastic or foam swim floats?

Cork is renewable, biodegradable, and naturally buoyant. Unlike plastic or EVA foam, it doesn’t release microplastics or break down into harmful waste. It’s also far more durable, which means fewer replacements and less waste overall.

Where does your cork come from?

Our cork is responsibly sourced from cork oak forests in Spain and Portugal. These forests support biodiversity and local communities while providing a carbon-positive material that’s perfect for swim gear.

Do you use plastic in your products or packaging?

No. All Corcamar products are completely plastic-free, and packaging is kept minimal, using recyclable or compostable materials whenever possible.

What charities or sustainability projects do you support?

For every personalised order, £2 is donated to Surfers Against Sewage or The Wave Project, two brilliant organisations that protect our oceans and make swimming accessible for everyone.

How long do cork swim floats last?

Cork is incredibly tough and naturally resistant to water damage, so your float should last for many years with basic care. When it does eventually reach the end of its life, it can be composted or repurposed.

What should I do with my cork float when I’m finished using it?

If it’s still in good condition, please pass it on to another swimmer, charity or school. If it’s worn out, cork can be composted, used as mulch in the garden, or even upcycled for home projects.

How do you make sure your business stays sustainable?

Every part of Corcamar’s process is considered - from local production and low-impact delivery to ethical sourcing and giving back to environmental causes. Even the way we ship aims to reduce emissions, and I personally drop off local orders to avoid unnecessary transport.

Are Corcamar floats suitable for people with accessibility needs?

Yes. Sustainability isn’t just about the planet, it’s about people too. Each float is designed to be comfortable and inclusive, supporting swimmers of all abilities to feel confident and safe in the water.

Do you ship internationally?

Not yet. For now, all orders are shipped within the UK to reduce carbon footprint and keep transport miles to a minimum.
